Specifically
dedicated to the pursuit of excellence in the craft of the
potter’s wheel for small, mixed ability groups of beginners,
amateurs, undergraduates, teachers and professionals.
Courses aim to
provide a disciplined and creative environment where
students can learn solid, practical skills, and raise their
own standards in both the quality and aesthetic integrity of
their finished work.
Novices will receive
a comprehensive introduction to the basic principles and
techniques of the craft, and others, a thorough review of
their existing skills before progressing onto new
challenges.
The course content
varies, but in general focuses on the generic forms and
techniques – clay preparation, cylinders, bellies, bowls and
plates, lips, handles and lids etc. There are regular
demonstrations for both the group as a whole and one-to-one
when required. A maximum group size of only 7 ensures
plenty of individual attention, and allow students to pursue
their own agendas.
As Richard is
specialist in the medium, a session on slip decoration is
commonly incorporated towards the end of the course. There
will be a supply of prepared red earthenware clay, but there
are stoneware clays available if you prefer to use it.
There is no kiln
firing during the week, this is an intensive, making and
refining block. Students may take unfired work home and/or
choose a few pieces for firing and collection later, but are
encouraged to be very selective.
Come to work hard
and improve your skills dramatically!
~ Summer Slipware
Master Class ~
This
will be a great opportunity to both develop your throwing
skills and practice traditional and contemporary slipware
techniques.
The
programme will begin on Monday with a decorating workshop on
pre prepared leather-hard tiles and pots with Richard and
Dylan Bowen, known for his wonderfully
free use of wet slip and slip trailing . Pots will be
provided, but students may bring a small group of their own
if they wish. The throwing programme will then get underway,
followed by further slip-decorating practice. On
Tuesday afternoon, Dominique Keeling
will demonstrate her lyrical painting style with slip
washes, resist and sgrafitto Dry pots
will go into a biscuit firing on the Wednesday. As the
practical work continues, a glazing session and glaze firing
will take place on Friday. The course will finish on
Saturday afternoon followed by an evening BBQ and a Sunday
morning kiln opening.
