Throwing A Jug

The clay is coned up and down in the centring process.

Using one hand to support the other, the centre of the jug is opened out and the first pull to form the wall is made.

Subsequent pulling, using the knuckle to press through the clay against the other hand's fingers, is used to give height to the jug.

The shape of the wall is gently guided.....

.....before the final pull upwards is made.

With the wall prepared, the rim is now formed.

The jug is bellied outwards using the fingers and knuckles.

Both the belly and the rim of the vessel are finalised with the rib.

The lip is gently stroked outwards.....

....and the jug is complete.

When leather hard, the jug is slipped and decorated ready for bisque firing.
